No. Your car does not need to have a valid insurance policy for it to be accepted by us for scrap. If your insurance is not valid, you will need to arrange for us to collect your vehicle. Our collection service is easy to arrange and above all, you should not drive your uninsured vehicle under any circumstances. Driving a vehicle on a road or in a public place without insurance against third party risk is an offence and carries penalties.

Unfortunately we do not accept scrap caravans under the Rewarding Recycling scheme.

We may be able to accept scrap motorcycles for recycling at selected Automotive Treatment Facilities (ATFs). As we are not able to give you an instant online quotation for motorcycles at the moment, you can obtain a quote by submitting your motorcycle details via our ‘Contact Us’ page here:

It helps us to know whether or not the keys are available, however this is not essential nor does it affect the quotation. To get an instant, no obligation quote click here.

No, but our quotation will be based on your car being free from waste. Being free from waste means that your car does not contain any significant items of refuse such as garden/ household waste or old tyres etc.; basically anything that does not form part of the car itself. To get your instant, no obligation quote click here.

No, but you should tell us about the damage in case it is severe enough to affect our quotation. Minor bumps or dents would not affect the price quoted. To find out how much you could get for your scrap car click here.

A complete vehicle is a car or light van which has all its essential parts. These essentials are: the engine, bodywork, transmission, catalytic converter (if originally fitted), major interior components such as seats, and wheels. Your vehicle does not have to be drivable nor does the engine have to run in order for it to be 'complete'. We will then scrap and recycle it to recover as much re-usable material as possible.

Once you have arranged to deliver your Vehicle to a dealership the following will happen :

  • The dealership will have recived notification of your booking and will therefore be expecting you to arrive within your selected timeframes
  • Once at the dealership, a representative will confirm that the vehicle and all of the accompanying documents match.
  • The vehicle should be surrendered with the following:

    • All of the available keys for the vehicle
    • The V5 document for the vehicle, you should complete the transfer to a motor trader/ dismantler section and ask that the dealership representative also signs the document. You should retain the traders/ dismantlers section (9) and surrender the remainder of the document with the vehicle. This should not be sent immediately to the DVLA but retained for your records as proof you have surrendered the vehicle to a motor trader/ dismantler. Once the vehicle is treated an Electronic Certificate of Destruction (CoD) will be issued by the Authorised Treatment facility (ATF). This will remove your vehicle from the records at the DVLA ensuring that you no longer have a liability towards the vehicle. Should you not receive a copy of your CoD by email within 7 days please contact Rewarding Recycling on 0800 542 2002, and this will be investigated.

You will then receive payment via your chosen method (click here for details)

The dealership will then arrange directly with an authorised ATF for your vehicle to be processed.

  • The collection agent will contact you to confirm an agreed time at which the collection can be made.
  • The collection agent will arrive at the agreed time and present to you collection paperwork which will contain your vehicle details, your personal information, and details of the collection agent. If such paperwork is not presented either in paper format or on an electronic PDA or you are suspicious in any way, the vehicle should not be released and you should call 0800 542 2002 to verify the agents identity.
  • The vehicle should be released with the following:

    • All of the available keys for the vehicle
    • The V5 document for the vehicle, you should complete the transfer to a motor trader/ dismantler section and ask that the collection agent signs the document. Yes you can. If you have any road tax remaining when you scrap your vehicle, as long as you were the registered keeper of the car at the time of disposal you can reclaim road tax for any unused complete months.

To apply for your refund if you have the tax disc, you will need to complete DVLA form V14 ‘Application for a refund of vehicle tax when you have the tax disc’. You can complete and download the V14 by clicking here.

To apply for your refund if the tax disc is missing, you will need to obtain and complete a DVLA form V33 ‘Application for a refund of vehicle tax when the tax disc is missing’. The V33 is not available online at this stage so you will need to call the DVLA customer line: 0300 790 6802 or go to your nearest DVLA office.

It’s all very straightforward. For more details about the process involved in scrapping your car, please take a look at our 'What happens next' page. If you have any further queries that aren’t answered amongst our Frequently Asked Questions, please do not hesitate to Contact Us.

Ideally, we prefer you to hand over your V5C registration document (also known as a log book) in order to issue your scrap car a Certificate of Destruction (CoD). However, if you do not have the registration document available, a Certificate of Destruction can usually be issued without it.

Your DVLA Certificate of Destruction will be sent to you electronically (by e-mail).

Your DVLA Certificate of Destruction (CoD) will be sent to you within 7 days of your car arriving at the Authorised Treatment Facility (recycling centre).

If your Certificate of Destruction has not arrived within 10 days of disposing of your car, please contact us using our online form and include your registration or reference number.

The Autogreen recycling centre will issue you with a DVLA Certificate of Destruction (CoD) which is proof that your vehicle has been scrapped legally. This Certificate shows that your vehicle is de-registered and that you are no longer responsible for that vehicle. Please make sure you keep your CoD securely.

PLEASE NOTE: The DVLA may fine those who do not obtain or cannot produce a CoD to demonstrate they have scrapped their car. Until you have a CoD, your car may still be registered. What is more you can still be deemed legally responsible for the car and therefore can be held liable for it. Unfortunately, there have been instances when unscrupulous vehicle dismantlers, who have not issued a CoD, have put cars back on the road for criminal purposes. In such instances, the registered owner may be liable for prosecution.

The End of Life Vehicle Regulations cover vehicles categorised as follows:

  • Category M1: Vehicles used for the carriage of passengers and comprising no more than eight seats in addition to the driver’s seat.
  • Category N1: Vehicles used for the carriage of goods and having a maximum
  • mass not exceeding 3.5 tonnes

The regulations also cover three-wheeled vehicles as defined by EU directive 92/61/EEC.

Vehicles outside this criteria are not included in the regulations, but should still be disposed of in line with recommendation to ensure minimal environmental impact.

The End of Life Vehicle Regulations are the legal requirements Authorised Treatment Facilities (ATFs) must meet to scrap and recycle vehicles. This legislation is designed to reduce the impact that scrap vehicles have on the environment.

The first part of the ELV regulations require end of life vehicles to be de-polluted. This means all hazardous pollutants such as fluids, tyres and batteries, are removed at an Authorised Treatment Facility before any of the vehicle’s parts or materials can be re-used or recycled.

The second part of the regulations require that both vehicle manufacturers and Authorised Treatment Facilities recycle 85% by weight of the vehicle. This target will be further increased to 95% by 2015.

An ‘end of life’ vehicle ( ELV ) is, quite simply, a vehicle that has come to the end of its useful life. More often, an ‘end of life’ vehicle may be known as a scrap car, junk car, write-off, total loss, breaker or salvage vehicle.

We estimate that over 2 million cars and light vans are scrapped in the UK every year. Unfortunately, nearly half of these vehicles may not be scrapped through the legitimate centres known as Authorised Treatment Facilities (ATFs).

We strongly recommend that an ATF is always used. The consequences of scrapping or disposing of a car through less legitimate routes are serious: last owners will be fined or penalised for not scrapping their car via an ATF. Only through an ATF can you be assured that your car has been recycled in line with EU legislation and only an ATF can provide you with a legitimate DVLA Certificate of Destruction (CoD) – this is vital as it provides legal proof that your car has been scrapped and is no longer registered.

Authorised Treatment Facilities (ATFs) are sites which have been licensed by the Environment Agency in England & Wales, the Scottish Environment Protection Agency in Scotland or the Northern Ireland Environment Agency in Northern Ireland. ATFs are charged with the task of de-polluting scrap cars to meet the stringent standards set by DEFRA (the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs) and the End of life Vehicle Regulations.

Only Authorised Treatment Facilities are permitted to issue last owners with a DVLA Certificate of Destruction (COD).

All of Autogreen's scrap car recycling centres are Authorised Treatment Facilities.

Authorised Treatment Facilities may also be known as ATFs, car dismantlers, scrap yards, junk yards, salvage yards, breakers or Car Take Back facilities.

Businesses can only legally scrap your vehicle if they have the required licenses from the Environment Agencies of the UK. It is a criminal offence for a business to recycle a car without an Authorised Treatment Facility (ATF) permit. Unfortunately there are unscrupulous companies in the scrap industry. Be aware that there have been cases of customers being misled, either being offered very little or no payment at all for a scrap car. Others have been deceived by being offered an extremely high price, only to be offered much less when the dealer actually comes to collect the vehicle or when it is delivered to the yard.

Be aware that the price paid for scrap metal constantly fluctuates in line with the market price for steel. Autogreen monitors UK scrap prices so we can ensure that we are offering you the best possible price for your scrap car. The costs of processing, and if you need us to collect your car, the distance travelled and time taken, may reduce the amount that can be paid to you.

Most scrap cars have a value, even when collected.
